🎄 Happy New Year!

Well that’s it - the year and decade are done! Hopefully this means the end of the brutal 2 year crypto bear market, right?

To celebrate the end of the year, I put together a Twitter thread breaking down the biggest and most important Ethereum-related events for 2019 (spoiler: its a huge list). Head here to check it out (or here for the Chinese version).

Also, obviously this is bad timing, but the Ethereum network will be undergoing its Muir Glacier network upgrade on January 2nd. The only change in this upgrade is an update to the difficulty bomb (ice age) which pushes it back by roughly 2 years. Please head here for detailed information about the upgrade and instructions on how to update your node. Head here to monitor the status of the overall network.

Have a great new year everyone!

🤔 Chinese Internet Giant Tencent to Launch Digital Currency Research Team

Tencent, the Chinese internet giant and owner of WeChat, is reportedly forming a team to explore possible new use cases for cryptocurrencies.

According to reports by Chinese media, Tencent issued an internal notice informing employees it was searching for someone to head a new cryptocurrency research unit, which will form part of the company's payments wing.

The new team will look at how to use digital currencies in its payments platform as well as explore other possible business applications. It will also consider how cryptocurrencies could be used within existing and future regulatory regimes.

The research team will reportedly support government initiatives in the area. The People's Bank of China (PBOC) is said to view Tencent as a prospective issuer for the digital yuan under development, according to reports in Quartz and CNBC.
